A worn drive wheel on your excavator can cause significant damage to the other components of the undercarriage - especially the excavator tracks.

How do I check the wear of the drive wheels, also called sprockets?

Although premature wear on drive sprockets is not common, it is important that this component is checked frequently for signs of damage or wear. To check the wear of a sprocket, the main thing to look for is the teeth that engage your machine's chain. When the sprocket is worn, the teeth will be pointier and sharper, while a good sprocket will have more rounded teeth. This is shown in the two examples below.

It is especially important to check the drive sprockets when changing the tracks on your machine. A worn drive sprocket will accelerate the wear of the track links and cause your tracks to wear out in a much shorter time. We always recommend changing the drive sprockets when fitting a new set of tracks to your machine as this not only saves time and money but also prevents premature wear and extends the uptime of your excavator.
