There are many factors to consider before deciding whether to use steel or rubber tracks on your mini excavator. While the obvious factor for many operators is price, there are other considerations to keep in mind as well, such as durability and the application of the machine. Below are the most important factors we believe should be considered before making your decision.
Cost - Generally, rubber tracks are cheaper than steel, making them seem like a better option. However, rubber tracks also wear out faster, meaning they will need to be replaced more often in the long run, which can be expensive and increase machine downtime.
Soil damage - Rubber tracks cause less erosion or damage than steel tracks on most soils due to their greater flexibility and softer rubber compounds.
Vibrations - Rubber tracks reduce vibrations, which in turn means less stress on the undercarriage components. Additionally, rubber tracks are not as loud as the clatter of steel tracks. Both factors also increase operator comfort.
Durability - Steel tracks are known for their durability. Rubber tracks are more susceptible to cuts and tears in sharp terrain, while steel tracks are unlikely to be affected by the strong, tough material.
Traction - Both steel and rubber tracks are highly mobile and provide excellent traction on most surfaces. On relatively smooth, dry surfaces such as concrete, turf or asphalt, rubber tracks have the advantage. However, steel tracks provide better traction on rougher terrain such as extremely rocky or wet, muddy terrain.
